CHENNAI: The State government is ready to double the number of copies of a book purchased for the public libraries to 2000, if writers and publishers made a contribution towards improving the quality of the libraries, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced on Saturday.

Addressing a meeting organised to lay the foundation stone for the Modern State Library Complex at Kotturpuram in Chennai, the Chief Minister said that earlier the government bought 600 copies of a book. This was later increased to 1,000. “It will not take much time to increase the numbers to 2,000 if the writers and publishers help in improving the quality of the libraries,” he said.

There were as many as 3,924 libraries in Tamil Nadu, but their functioning was not praiseworthy.

The Chief Minister had a word of praise for School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who is also in charge of libraries in the State.

“He has fulfilled my expectations. He may not meet me regularly. But he has the capacity to read my mind and discharge his duties,” he said.

The eight-storied library to be constructed at a cost of Rs 120 crore will have a plinth area of 3,33,140 sq.ft. It will have a reading capacity for 1,200 persons and a stacking capacity of 11.5 lakh books. A conference hall with a capacity of 200 persons and a mini conference hall to accommodate 30 persons will be part of the library.

The library complex will include an auditorium with a capacity of 1,280 persons and an amphitheatre with a plinth area of 42,630 sq.ft. The construction will be over by April 2010.
