TDP picks holes in draft voter list

Correspondent

‘Names of many are missing’

VIZIANAGARAM: Names of about 22,500 voters have figured twice or thrice in the list of 1,70,977 voters in the Cheepurupalli Assembly constituency that comprises four mandals due to “reckless and faulty” enumeration, said Gadde Babu Rao, TDP leader and former MLA from the constituency.

At the same time, names of many a number of eligible voters were missing in the draft list, he said.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Babu Rao said, according to his own survey, about 7000 to 8000 eligible voters in each mandal in the constituency were missing due to double entries.

He circulated draft list among mediapersons to substantiate his claim. At several places names of persons with photographs were found repeatedly and in serial order. Names of deceased persons which were not registered during enrolment in 2004 were now included in the list, Mr. Babu Rao said.

Discrepancies in each polling booth were also detected.

In some cases, names of men with photographs were found in the list of polling booths meant exclusively for women and vice versa.

The number of voters in 2004 elections was 1.47 lakhs and the number of polling booths that were 189 prior to delimitation increased to 230.

In some polling booths names of voters in one panchayat figured in the neighbouring panchayat, he said and added that Revenue officials had not taken note of the double and triple entries until he pointed out the blunders to tehsildars and the Joint Collector recently. The JC had asked tehsildars to correct the list before the due date. Demanding a resurvey of the voters, he felt that the number voters would come down from the 1,70,977 listed in the draft.

On his resignation from the constituency in-charge post recently, Mr. Babu Rao said that it was submitted to the party district president only to facilitate appointment of a full-fledged in-charge for the constituency.
