NEW DELHI: The Delhi police bagged 14 Police Medals for Distinguished and Meritorious Service on the occasion of Independence Day. Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh has been conferred Police Medal for Distinguished Service. A 1984 batch IPS officer, he has played a pivotal role in data computerisation in the Delhi police. As Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West Delhi), he handled major riots at Ashok Vihar in 1992. He was posted as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railway) from 1997 to 1999. Under his supervision, his teams neutralised and arrested several criminals. His teams also worked out 42 bomb blasts that rocked Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab in 1997 and 1998. In all, 22 Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agents were arrested from different parts of the country, according to a Delhi police release. Mr. Singh was awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002. He was promoted as Joint Commissioner of Police in June 2004. His teams solved the Liberty and Satyam cinemas, Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj and Govindpuri blast cases. Assistant Commissioner of Police Naresh Chander Aneja and Inspector Sehdev Singh have also been awarded Police Medals for Distinguished Services. Mr. Aneja is presently the FIBA commissioner and an international basketball referee. He was awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2000. Inspector Sehdev Singh was instrumental in averting riots at Bapa Nagar and Dev Nagar and he saved several members of the Sikh community. As the Station House Officer of Hazrat Nizamuddin, he arrested “drug mafia” Sharafat Sheikh. He was awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2001. Those who have been awarded medals for meritorious services are Joint Commissioner of Police Maninder Singh Sandhu, Additional Commissioners of Police Virender Singh and Sunil Garg, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh, Inspectors Ashok Dhawan, Raj Singh and Awanish Chander Dwivedi, Sub-Inspectors Diwan Lal and Satya Pal, Ramesh Singh and Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhagwan Singh. Deependra Pathak, a 1990 batch IPS officer who is now posted as a director with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, has also been conferred the medal for meritorious service. The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry has been conferred on Inspector Brahmpal Singh Rana and Head Constable Sunder Lal. Inspector Rana was instrumental in containing a riot at Okhla, while Sunder Lal had in September 2006 arrested a desperate criminal. The Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Services has been awarded to Divisional Officer Vipin Kental, Assistant Divisional Officer Sarjiwan Kaushik, Station Officer Mahabir Singh Dahiya, Sub-Officers Raghubir Singh, Hansraj Gahlot and Suresh Chand, Driver Sahdev Singh and Assistant Wireless Officer Sushil.
