CLEAN MALAPPURAM: Malappuram municipal chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob inaugurating the cleanliness drive by operating a bush cutter in Malappuram on Saturday. MALAPPURAM: Final year degree students from various private colleges in the Malappuram municipality launched a cleanliness drive here on Saturday as part of their compulsory social service (CSS) scheme. About 500 students took part in the ‘Clean Malappuram’ campaign, clearing bushes and removing garbage from eight centres under the municipality. Inaugurating the programme at the District Collector’s bungalow, Municipal Chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob exhorted the students to be in the forefront in maintaining the surroundings clean. Councillor Harris Amiyan was present at the function. The areas the students cleaned included Manjeri Road, Thamarakkuzhi and Kottappadi. The students removed a large number of obscene cinema posters from the town. Mr. Amiyan said that the second phase of the cleanliness programme would be launched next week. The students would distribute pamphlets highlighting the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness to the houses in all the 37 wards of the municipality.
