Poll panel nod for deadline extension
Scrutiny of applications from September 1-15 New software to enter names in Telugu likely
HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India has accepted the government’s request to give some more time for receiving claims and objections from people on the revision of electoral rolls in the State.
Accordingly, the last date has been extended from August 20 to August 31. This would be followed by scrutiny of the received applications from September 1 to 15 and the final revised rolls will by published on September 30.
Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao told reporters on Saturday that the extension was sought following disruption of work due to heavy rain and floods in some parts of the State recently. Individuals and political parties could now file their petitions on missing names in the electoral rolls, errors in names, mismatches of photographs and voters’ names and other lapses before the last date. He dismissed the rumours that the authorities were deleting names of voters as, more number of them had been enrolled on the basis of the 2001 census and asserted that there was no ceiling on the number of voters. He said they were exploring options for introducing new software that would enable error-free entry of names in Telugu.
