BANGALORE: Protecting the nearly 10,000 identified historical monuments in the State had become impossible because of acute shortage of staff and funds, Venkatesh Machakanur, Commissioner, Department of Cultural Heritage, said here on Saturday.

The department had been able to protect only about 1,000 of these monuments in different parts of the State, he said at the inauguration of “Save Historical Heritage Week-2008,” organised by the Karnataka Itihasa Academy in association with the State Archaeology Department here.

He appealed to Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali, who inaugurated the event, to facilitate setting up of heritage clubs at least in one college in every taluk. Members of the heritage clubs with the assistance of local people could work towards protecting the historical monuments in their respective taluks.

Members of the Heritage Club at Lingaraj College in Belgaum had recently camped at the site where the British had hanged to death the illustrious warrior and freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna. The members not only learnt of the history and heritage, but also created awareness about it among others, Mr. Machakanur said.

Karnataka Itihasa Academy president Suryanath Kamath said the academy was organising the “Save Historical Heritage Week” all over the State every year. Former Minister Haranahalli Ramaswamy presided over the function. Gali Swamy, secretary, Dayanand Sagar Group of educational institutions honoured students who won prizes in essay-writing contest conducted by the academy.
