Bangalore: The Government will provide five per cent reservation in education, including higher education, for those who have passed tenth standard in the Kannada medium in any institution in the country. This was disclosed by chairman of the Kannada Development of Authority “Mukhyamantri” Chandru at a press conference here on Saturday. Mr. Chandru said that the previous coalition government favoured such a proposal upon learning that a number of students had been studying in Kannada medium schools either in the border areas or in neighbouring States such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The Cabinet had also given in-principle approval to it, pending amendment to the rules. The BJP Government would bring in amendments to the rules and issue a Government Order to that effect, he said. Mr. Chandru said the KDA had issued notices to vigilance officers Khadar Khan and Udhaneshwara Prasad of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation for violating rules on implementing Kannada in administration. There were complaints that the two officials had been using English while dealing with employees. The KDA had drawn the attention of Minister of Transport R. Ashok on the issue. The Minister had promised stringent action against the officials, he added. Referring to the reported refusal to speak in Kannada in the Legislative Assembly by Qamar-ul Islam (Congress) and Derick Fullinfaw (Nominated), Mr. Chandru said he had drawn the attention of the presidents of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and the Bharatiya Janata Party to this. A letter had also been sent to the MLAs requesting them to learn and speak in Kannada in the House.
