Work on 39 water schemes to begin on October 2

PALAKKAD: Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has said that work on 39 drinking water supply schemes, costing Rs.630 crore, will be inaugurated in the State on October 2, Gandhi Jayanthi Day.

Inaugurating the second phase of the drinking water supply scheme for Palakkad town at Kalmandapam on Saturday, the Minister said that during the last two years of the Left Democratic Front government, a capital investment of Rs.5,000 crore was made in the water supply sector. This showed that money was not a problem for development works in the State, he said.

Jalanidhi schemes

The State government had submitted Jalanidhi drinking water supply schemes costing Rs.1,200 crore with assistance from NABARB for the approval of the Centre.

Eight drinking water supply schemes would be commissioned in the district by March 31, 2009, he said.

Mr. Premachandran said the LIC of India-financed drinking water supply schemes that were held up now would be restarted soon.

The inaugural function was presided over by K.K. Divakaran, MLA. N.N. Krishnadas, MP, was the chief guest.
