Election Commission accepts A.P.’s request

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India has accepted the Andhra Pradesh government’s request to give some more time for receiving claims and objections from people on the revision of electoral rolls in the State.

Accordingly, the last date has been extended from August 20 to August 31.

This will be followed by scrutiny of the received applications from September 1 to 15 and the final revised rolls will be published on September 30.

Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao told reporters on Saturday that the extension was sought following disruption of work due to heavy rain and floods in some parts of the State recently. Individuals and political parties could now file their petitions on missing names in the electoral rolls, errors in names, mismatches of photographs and voters’ names and other lapses before the last date.

The Collectors and other election authorities have been asked to give transparent, patient and considerate audience to the applicants.

Lapses

Replying to queries, he admitted that some lapses could have taken place as the election authorities took up more than one task — revision of rolls, delimitation of constituencies and other works — simultaneously.

To a question, he said the authorities were also exploring options for introducing new software that would enable error-free entry of names in Telugu .
