Christians seek political reservation

Staff Reporter

‘This is the only way to solving the woes of the community’

Votes of the community crucial , says council leader

Lagadapati to be chief guest for inauguration of council office

VIJAYAWADA: Demanding political reservation to Christians in every elected body, from panchayats to Parliament, national secretary of the All-India Christian Council Syam Paul on Saturday said that the council was focusing on strengthening the organisation from the grassroots.

As part of this exercise, the office of the youth wing of the Krishna district of the council would be opened at Machavaram on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Paul said that in the wake of multi-party system gaining ground at the Centre and in the State, the votes of Christian community had become crucial for the formation of any government. “We need our share of seats in Legislative Assembly and Parliament, as it is the only way to find solutions to our problems.

We demand all political parties to allocate seats to Christians keeping our share of population in view,” he said.

Population

Claiming that the actual population of Christians was much higher than the statistics being shown by the Government, Mr. Paul said that a recent survey conducted by the council had revealed that the Christian population was some 2 crores in Andhra Pradesh alone.

General secretary of the council’s State unit K. Prabhu Kumar said MP Lagadapati Rajagopal would be the chief guest for the inauguration of the council’s office.

The objective

Mayor Mallika Begum, Government Whip S. Udayabhanu and other leaders would participate.

The objective of the district unit was to enrol one lakh members by the end of this year.
