Kerala worst hit Water scarcity could worsen NEW DELHI: Rainfall over Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh will decline in the coming days, according to a forecast. But the northeastern States, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh are headed for a fairly widespread rainfall. The forecast means water scarcity could worsen in several parts of central and south peninsular India. However, there could be some improvement in the situation in the northeast over the next one week. As of August 13, six out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions recorded a deficiency of over minus 15 per cent of their long period average: Kerala (minus 27 per cent), Marathwada in Maharashtra (minus 37), north interior Karnataka (minus 18), coastal Karnataka (minus 16), Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (minus 26) and Assam and Meghalaya (minus 23). The rainfall was deficient in almost the entire northeast and in several areas in the central and southern peninsular region. Kerala has been the worst hit followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. In Kerala, deficient rain has been recorded in 10 out of the 14 districts. In Maharashtra, 19 out of the 33 districts and in Karnataka, seven out of the 27 districts have recorded deficient rainfall. In contrast, the monsoon has been quite good in north and east India. The performance has been the best in Orissa, where not a single district recorded deficiency. Out of its 30 districts, 14 have recorded excess rainfall, and the others, normal precipitation. In U.P., PunjabIn Uttar Pradesh, 34 out of the 64 districts have recorded excess rainfall, 20 normal and five deficient. In Punjab, 10 out of the 16 districts have recorded excess rainfall, four normal and two deficient.
