OSACS first to appoint PLHA patient

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) on Saturday claimed it became the first organisation in the country to appoint a PLHA (people living with HIV/AIDS) as a coordinator.

Among many applicants, who applied for the post of GIPA (Greater involvement with people living with AIDS) coordinator, Ajay Patra, a PLHA candidate, was chosen, said OSACS. His responsibility would be to establish better coordination among PLHA networks.

Although National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) guidelines said the post of GIPA coordinator should be kept reserved for PLHA, no State had so far made appointment against this reservation, said Manoj Kandher, assistant director of OSACS.

OSACS has facilitated setting up of networks of positive people in as many as 12 districts of the State. Mr. Patra would communicate constantly with these PLHA, who had been facing social stigma on many occasions.
