BERHAMPUR: Death of an under-trial prisoner led to tense scenes at Phulbani in Kandhamal district on Saturday. Srikant Sahani, who was in the Phulbani district jail since past one year due to dacoity cases pending against him complained of severe dizziness and other ailments in the morning. Sahani was a resident of Telapalli village under Phiringia police station. The jail officials immediately took Sahani to Phulbani district hospital. Despite efforts by the doctors, he could not be saved. According to the medical authorities he died of cardiac arrest. But the family members of the deceased and the other inhabitants of Telapalli village reached the hospital and alleged that Sahani had died due to negligence of the doctors and jail officials. They tried to ransack the hospital. They also did not let the jail officials or the police take over the body of Sahani for post mortem. This unruly scene prevailed for several hours. As a precautionary measure one platoon of armed police was immediately placed near the Phulbani district jail and the hospital. Administrative officials and police officials led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Rajendra Patnaik could manage to pacify the mob and the body could be sent for post mortem. Senior Superintendent of jails, Bankim Mohanty, who heads prisons in Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts, said after the death of under-trial security was tightened around Phulbani jail.
