Correspondent

Highest loss in Chamarajanagar taluk

Chamarajanagar: The failure of rainfall up to July-end resulted in loss of crops worth Rs. 23.74 crore in the district.

Sowing took place on 88,251 hectares of land as against the target of 1.48 lakh hectares set by the Agriculture Department for 2008-09. The target was not achieved because farmers did not take up cultivation in 60,414 hectares. Crops such as jowar, ragi, maize, sunflower and groundnut were badly affected due to shortage of rainfall. The farmers had cultivated grain on 48,385 hectares, oilseeds on 36,564 hectares and commercial crops on 3,302 hectares of land.

According to sources, crops grown on 7,996 hectares in Chamarajanagar taluk and 30,132 hectares in Gundlupet taluk were damaged. The highest crop loss was in Chamarajanagar taluk followed by Gundlupet taluk.

Joint Director of Agriculture K. Sangaiah told The Hindu that crops grown on 38,128 hectares were damaged and the losses amounted to Rs. 23.74 crore. Farmers in the district had taken up cultivation of crops such as local jowar, Shaktiman jowar, maize, ragi, green gram, red gram, groundnut, sunflower, cotton and other crops on 88,251 hectares of land.
