CPI(M) demands cancellation of lease to IDCOL , Reliance

CUTTACK: Enraged over death of one of their party workers, the Cuttack unit of the CPI (M) has demanded to cancel the lease agreements by virtue of which, the IDCOL is holding over 500 acres of land under the Tangi-Choudwar tehsil of the district.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, the district CPI (M) president Subash Singh alleged that IDCOL, which got this land in 1982, has sold about 50 acres of land to Reliance Fresh for having a food processing unit here.

While taking possession of this land, the Reliance employees faced a massive protest from the local SC and ST population that have settled on these areas since long.

“On Thursday, while protesting against the Reliance construction of boundary in the area, the protestors were brutally attacked some local goons engaged by the Reliance”, alleges Singh.

Singh said at least four tribal persons were injured in the attack and later one Dur Samal, a 60-year-old woman died succumbing to the injuries, he added.

Samal’s body was taken from the hospital on Friday evening and was cremated after a massive rally.

Earlier the party activists had demanded immediate arrest of the accused persons engaged in the attack and a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the family members of the deceased person.

They have also demanded cancellation of all the leases in favour of the IDCOL and Reliance.

Singh and Choudwar unit of the party chief Badrinarayan Das pointed out that IDCOL was given the land for industrial development of the area.

But during the past 26 years of its possession, IDCOL has not been able to set up a single industrial unit in the area.

“Instead, mafias and quarry units were allowed to destroy the area by carrying out illegal quarry activities here”, they alleged.
