Manipal: “India being a free country should have her own foreign policy. Other countries cannot dictate terms to India on what to do and what not to. India is capable of taking her own decisions, and issues related to security and safety should not be influenced by any other country, including the U.S.,” Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University Rajasekharan Warrier said here on Friday. He was speaking as the special prime speaker at the intercollegiate pre-model United Nations (MUN) debate competition organised by the Department of Geopolitics, Manipal University. The topic for the debate was “The Indo-U.S. nuclear deal infringes on India’s right to pursue an independent foreign policy.” As many as 15 two-member teams from various colleges participated in the debate. The “best debating team” award was won by Vatsal and Arunabh of the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). Ranita Goswami and Swati took the second prize and Deepti Prasad and Khushboo, first-year students of Manipal Life Sciences Centre, the third. Deepti was adjudged the “best speaker” in the competition. She spoke for the motion. Winners in the competition will get direct entry as delegates to the MUN 2008 scheduled to be held between October 2 and 5 this year at Manipal University. Honorary Director, Manipal Institute of Communication, M.V. Kamath, who was one among the three judges, said that he was impressed by the serious and brilliant manner in which the participants discussed the motion. “Although it is not possible to discuss such an issue in just three to five minutes, their tremendous homework and presentation was quite impressive,” he said. Head, Department of Geopolitics, Arvind Kumar, and Head, Department of Commerce, Ajay Shah were the other judges for the competition.
