CHENNAI: There is every possibility of Lok Sabha elections before the end of this year, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said on Saturday.
Talking to reporters at a marriage hall here where the party general council is under way, Mr. Vaiko said that the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre was able to survive because of “horse trading.” He wondered how long it could pull on. “Any time, this government can fall,” Mr. Vaiko said, criticising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
To a query, he said Dr. Singh had brought disrepute to the post of Prime Minister. He said his party would continue in the front headed by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The front would sweep the Lok Sabha polls. Issues on induction of more parties into the front would be decided by AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa.
Mr. Vaiko said the State government had become unpopular on various issues, including shortage of electricity and fertilizer.
In a resolution, the general council commended M. Kannappan, R. Masilamani and Durai. Balakrishnan for their election to the posts of presidium chairman, treasurer and deputy general secretary of the MDMK.
