Thiruvananthapuram: The third edition of TechTop, a contest featuring projects by engineering students, jointly organised by Technopark and Degree Controls Inc, will be held on the Technopark campus on August 18 and 19. The competition, supported by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Executive Knowledge Lines, is to promote the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among young technocrats. As many as 85 students representing 33 teams from engineering colleges all over the country are participating in TechTop 2008. Winners of the competition will take home the prestigious Degree C award and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. Project to productThe biggest attraction of the competition, however, is the opportunity given to the winning teams to develop their project into a commercially viable product at the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) at Technopark, which bagged the best TBI award of the Union Ministry for Science and Technology last year. “The idea is to identify young technology innovators, encourage them and make them productive for the economy. All the projects selected after final screening shall be eligible for incubation support from Technopark TBI,” said Chairman and CTO of Degree Control Rajesh Nair. The theme for this year’s contest is Rural Technology and Global Warming. “We received around 90 projects from different parts of the country out of which 33 were selected for the final screening. These teams represent 10 States including five from Kerala,”said TechTop coordinator Moossa C.K. As part of TechTop a TechQuiz for high school and higher secondary students will also be held on August 18. The project exhibition at TechTop will be open to public on August 18 and 19. IT Secretary Ajay Kumar will present the awards to the winners on August 19.
