Bus strike in Thripunithura

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Private bus services in Thripunithura and nearby areas were affected on Friday also, catching commuters off-guard.

This is the fourth day that the strike is on in Thripunithura. The strike called in other areas was withdrawn on Thursday evening.

A bus, which conducted service on Friday, was stoned in Thripunithura and the passengers were forced to disembark.

The local police said that they did not know who issued the strike call.

Joy Joseph, general secretary of the Private Bus Thozhilali Federation (AITUC) said the coordination committee of trade unions had withdrawn the strike on Thursday.

“Some anti-social elements are preventing the smooth plying of buses in Thripunithura,” he said, adding that zonal-level strikes would begin on Thursday in Chitoor and Cheranaloor, where buses owned by office-bearers of bus owners’ associations dominate the services.

This is to reiterate the demand that private bus workers in the city be given fair wages fixed by the government.
