Show of talent by special children

WELL DONE: Students of Asha Deepam with the overall shield in Tiruchi. —

TIRUCHI: Over 200 students from seven special schools gave a spirited display of their talents at the Regional Mentally Retarded Educational Competition conducted by the Tamil Nadu Mentally Retarded Development Association (TNMRDA) here on Saturday.

The competition was sponsored by Rotary Club of Tiruchi and Hermon Charitable Trust.

“This is for the third year that we are conducting the competition for these children,” said TNMRDA secretary H. Simpson Rajkumar.

In the oratorical section, the students had ‘Tirukurral’ recitation and elocution competitions. Drawing, dictation and quiz events saw enthusiastic participation of the children.

In the mentally challenged section, Asha Deepam (43 points), Arivalayam (31) and Eswar Special School took the top three spots respectively.

In the autistic category, Nest (44) clinched the overall championship. Arivalayam (24) and Asha Deepam finished second and third respectively.

Speaking at the valediction, Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan commended the efforts taken by the teachers to train the children. He gave away the prizes in the presence of Santa Maria Matriculation School Principal C. Arogyaraj.
