PUDUCHERRY: The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) has urged the government to take steps to implement the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act in the Union Territory. According to a release, the federation adopted several resolutions at its 13th State conference conducted on Thursday. The NFIW wanted the authorities to immediately open the newly-constructed Government Hospital for Women and Children, as patients visiting the Government Maternity Hospital suffered from space constraint. The federation said a permanent director should be appointed to the Women and Child Development Department for proper implementation of welfare schemes. It also urged the government to strengthen women self-help groups. The NFIW would stage a protest on September 4, demanding quicker implementation of the Act for providing 33 per cent reservation for women and to control spiralling prices, the release said.
