Maoist threat

It seems the whole State is under grip of Maoist threat. Two suspected naxalite leaders were arrested from Jagatsinghpur district and in Jajpur district, movement of naxalites often comes in the news.

There is hardly any district left where naxalites had not accessed their youths for their cadre. Intelligence officials were quoted saying that naxalites are active in Puri and Khurda even.

Why do naxalites get fertile ground in coastal districts? The policy makers should ponder over it. Whether the recruits from these districts are ever harassed by the police administration or annoyed by displacement being caused by multinational companies. This aspect should be studied in detail.

Great achievement

Finally the gold search in Olympic games by India ended with Abhinab Bindra came out top in a firing event. Right from political groups to sports community to students, everybody enjoyed and took pride over the achievement.

No doubt it is a great achievement considering the fact that India always faces threat of returning from Olympic games with empty hand. But as a big nation like India, are we not eligible to win more gold?

I think we have not managed our resources well to get best out of the budding sports persons. Everybody including private companies is hankering after cricket where as other sports get little attention. Indian government has long understood the fact, but has done nothing.

It should have earmarked certain segment of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund for development of sports.

The willing to excel in other sports truly lacks. We hardly find any infrastructure that support sports like boxing, swimming, hockey and firing at school level. The Sports Authority of India appeared to be just like another hostel. Some sportspersons spend their years sporting tracksuits.

Rice scheme

Naveen Patnaik Government has started providing 25 kg of rice to the below poverty line families at the rate of Rs.-2-a-kg. The workers of the Biju Janata Dal are now happy that the scheme would help them fetch votes.

But what about the poor families who had not been issued BPL cards so far and are being denied benefit of the new rice scheme. There are a large number of poor families without BPL cards.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik may be happy that his rice scheme had come handy to silence the Opposition parties that were taking up of various issues, including the law order situation. He is also going round saying that the scheme would help poor families cope with the price rise.

But what would happen to Mr. Patnaik if the scheme ends up making more harm to the ruling alliance than good. In all probability, the scheme would prove disastrous for his government if the Assembly polls not held earlier than the schedule.
