Ex-Samajwadi chief joins BJD

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Former president of the Samajwadi Party Orissa unit Baisnab Charan Parida and a large number of his supporters joined the Biju Janata Dal here on Sunday.

A meeting at the BJD headquarters marked the formal joining of Mr. Parida. Over 200 people who worked with Mr. Parida in the past also joined the regional party. They came from as many as 16 different districts

Chief Minister and the BJD president Naveen Patnaik, senior party leaders Pyari Mohan Mohapatra and Prafulla Chandra Ghadai were present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Patnaik said Mr. Parida’s entry would help strengthen the BJD in the coming days.

Formerly a Communist, Mr. Parida was in the Congress party before shifting to the Samajwadi Party.

He had resigned from the Samajwadi Party a few months ago.

Another batch of district level leaders from western Orissa districts who earlier worked with Mr. Parida were also scheduled to join the BJD shortly.
