Expedite work on Upper Bhadra Project: samiti

Staff Correspondent

Delegation to meet Chief Minister to press the demand

Delegation to comprise samiti members, elected representatives

Lack of budgetary allocation for project questioned

Chitradurga: The Chitradurga Neeravari Horata Samiti has decided to take a delegation to the Chief Minister at the end of the month urging him to expedite work on the Upper Bhadra Irrigation Project.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting convened by the samiti to chalk out strategies to pressure the Government into implementing the project without any further delay. The delegation will comprise over 1,000 members of various parties, elected representatives and members of the samiti.

The meeting, which was convened here on Sunday, was attended by functionaries of several organisations, prominent leaders and elected representatives. Voicing concern over the delay and the alleged failure of the Government to allocate funds in the budget, samiti convener Banjagere Jaiprakash, said that despite several appeals, the Government did not announce any special funds for the project in the budget.

Reneged

“Successive Governments have reneged on their promise and have not taken up implementation of the project with interest. So far, the Government has only set up an office for the project in Chitradurga, and nothing concrete has come of it,” he added. The Government might have taken some steps for the implementation of the project, but those had not been made public, he said. This had led to complete distrust in the Government and its efficacy, Mr. Jaiprakash said.

Communist leader Chandranna asked why the Government had not set aside funds for the project if it was that serious about implementing it. Samiti president M. Jayanna said that during the previous coalition Government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy, an announcement was made stating that funds had been reserved for the project. But, no such initiative seems to have been made.

Invitation

He said that soon, Minster for Major and Medium Irrigation Basavaraj Bommai, would be invited to the district and apprised of the details of the project. He urged the people to join the agitation to get the project completed in time. The project is expected to solve the irrigation and drinking water problems of the district.

Holalkere MLA M. Chandrappa, writer G.S. Ujjanappa and farmer leader K.P. Bhutaiah spoke.
