Call for Davangere bandh on Wednesday

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has called for closure of schools and colleges here on August 20 in protest against the purported entry of foreign universities into the country.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, Ananda Naika, joint secretary of the State unit of the SFI, said education would become expensive if foreign universities were allowed to establish campuses here and expressed fear that our “value-based education system” would be eroded.

The youth here could be misled by such universities, he said and added that when most of them were not even able to afford to study in private institutions, how could the Government expect them to enrol in foreign universities. Several professional graduates who had studied in the country, had excelled abroad, he said but regretted that they had to work there owing to lack of opportunities back home.

The SFI demanded that the Government provide infrastructure to all schools, colleges and universities in the country and not permit entry of foreign universities.

The organisation would take out a cycle rally on August 18 during which activists would visit all schools and colleges spreading awareness on the “harmful effects of foreign university education in India,” Mr. Naika said.
