KOCHI: A group of writers and activists has come out against the special economic zones being set up under the SEZ Act of 2005 in the State. They said in a statement that it would promote colonialism and foreign capital and not promote the State’s development. It also would not increase job opportunities. The SEZs tended to promote wage slavery as labour laws would not be applied to them. It would be the government’s responsibility to acquire land needed for the SEZs and provide cheap water and power to them. Huge tax cuts would have to be given to them. In view of these, the group urged the government to drop its move to permit SEZs in Kerala. The statement was signed by KG. Sankara Pillai, M.N. Ravunni, P. Geetha and several others. — Special Correspondent
