Need to preserve legacy of court artist underlined

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Works of the late Y. Subramanya Raju, the court artist of the erstwhile Mysore royals, should be preserved because it is a State legacy, Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao has said.

He was inaugurating the Mysore traditional art exhibition organised in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of Y. Subramanya Raju held at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat on Sunday.

Mr. Rao said that Mysore’s art forms had a special place in the world of art, and that Subramanya Raju was one of the very few who spread its spirit across the world. Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and Rajya Sabha member S.M. Krishna inaugurated the exhibition.

Mr. Raju, along with K. Venkatappa, was responsible for the revival of Mysore art, he said.

Mr. Krishna suggested that an art museum and gallery in the name of Subramanya Raju be established in Bangalore.

R.B. Bhaskaran, former chairman of the Lalita Kala Academy, New Delhi, released the Y. Subramanya Raju centenary volume “Chitragarudiga.”
