BGSS reconsidering plan to boycott Dasara

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The Bharateeya Girijana Shikshana Samsthe (BGSS) is reconsidering its decision to boycott Dasara festivities following the assurance given by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister and district in-charge Shobha Karandlaje that the demands of the tribal people of Nagarahole, mahouts and helpers will be met.

Sources in the district administration said that Ms. Karandlaje would flag off “Gajapayana” that signals the countdown to Dasara, and the occasion, she would make a public announcement with regard to meeting the demands of the tribal people, mahouts and helpers.

Ms. Karandlaje told presspersons here on Sunday that the honorarium for mahouts would be increased from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 3,000 and the issue of regularising their services would be discussed in Cabinet.

She appealed to the BGSS to drop their boycott plan and help in making Dasara a memorable event.

According to sources in the Forest Department, a decision has been taken to regularise the services of 37 helpers working in elephant camps.
