YSR to launch tunnel works

ONGOLE: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will launch the tunnel boring machine that would drill 18-km long tunnel in Nallamala hills as part of Veligonda project at Kothur near Dornala in Prakasam district on Tuesday.
He would come by helicopter from Hyderabad and land at the project site at 11.30 am on August 19. The tunnel with a diameter of seven meters would help bring 40 tmc ft of Krishna waters from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir and empty the waters in the Veligonda reservoir being constructed closing the gaps between hills at Kakarla, Gottipadia and Sunkesula. The water would provide irrigation facility to 1.25 lakh acres in the drought affected areas of Prakasam district. The government has also agreed to drill a tunnel to irrigate area under Veligonda project.
