Manikrao Thakare is Maharashtra PCC chief

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress central leadership on Sunday reorganised the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) by appointing Manikrao Thakare as its president and Jayant Awale as working president. At the same time, the Congress remained silent on the resignation submitted by Revenue Minister Narayan Rane.

Besides, Lok Sabha member Gurudas Kamat has been appointed chairman of the Campaign Committee for the State, which is due for Assembly elections in 2009. And, Kripa Shankar Singh, who originally hails from Uttar Pradesh, has been nominated president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) with an eye on consolidating the sizable non-Maharashtrian votebank in the metropolis in the wake of the campaign against North Indians by the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

With this, the vacuum at the top in both MPCC and MRCC has been filled. Mr. Thakare replaces Prabha Rau, who was made Himachal Pradesh Governor last month. The post of MRCC president has been lying vacant for long; ever since Mr. Kamat stepped down earlier this year at the close of his term.

According to the announcement made by the All-India Congress Committee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had approved the nomination of the four new office-bearers to their respective posts.

Earlier, Mr. Rane – who has been sulking for a while now over differences with Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh – had been offered the opportunity of heading the Campaign Committee.
