CGC ‘C’ is champion

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Golf Club ‘C’ emerged the overall team winner in the GKD Memorial Gold Cup all-India inter-club golf championship at the CGC Course in Chettipalayam, here on Sunday.

The host fielded three teams for the big event. Much was expected of the top two teams but to the surprise of the crowd, CGC ‘C’, comprising Vignesh Ranga Rao (138), N. Soundararajan (157) and V. Ayyaswamy (154), tallied 449 for the title.

Pune Golf Club, consisting of Dr. Datem, Prashanth Bafna and Amit Chillal, wrested the second spot with a total of 459.

Vignesh (138 nett), who played a vital role for the team, also sealed the top spot in category 0-9.

R. Venkatarangappan, whole-time director, Lakshmi Machine Works Limited, gave away the prizes.

The results: Team: Overall: 1. CGC ‘C’ 449 (Vignesh Ranga Rao 138, N. Soundararajan 157, V. Ayyaswamy 154); 2. Pune Golf Club 459 (Dr. Date, Prashant Bafna, Amit Chillal).

Category-wise: 0-9: 1. Vignesh Ranga Rao (138 nett); 2. Pramod Kurien 148 (better second day). 10-16: 1. Gautam Selvaraj (142); 2. V. Rajendran 149. 16-24: 1. Brig. V.K. Chona (151); 2. Amit Chillal.

Special awards: Closet to the pin: Deepak Nath (4ft 8 inches). Longest drive: Husni (Kodai) 296 yards. Most birdies: Vignesh Ranga Rao (CGC). — Sports Reporter
