Minister inspects ESI hospital

Staff Correspondent

The 100-bed unit is managed by only four doctors

INTERACTION: Labour Minister B.N. Bache Gowda speaking to a patient at the ESIC hospital during his visit, in Mangalore on Sunday.

MANGALORE: Labour Minister B.N. Bache Gowda took stock of the situation at the Employees State Insurance Corporation’s hospital at Shivabagh here on Sunday. The 100-bed hospital, which is managed by four doctors, has 21 doctor posts vacant.

Speaking to presspersons before the arrival of the Minister, the staff of the hospital alleged that the maintenance of the hospital was caught in a tangle of official red tape. Crucial equipment was either non-existent or outdated and dysfunctional, they said.

One official said that periodic reminders were being sent to the State’s authorities for new equipment or funds. “The X-ray machine has been defunct for over a year,” a staff member said. Mr. Bache Gowda told presspersons that all the seven ESI hospitals in the State were facing similar problems.

About 70 per cent of posts of doctor and paramedics were lying vacant. “It is not that we have not tried to fill these posts. People who were appointed have quit the job,” he said. MLA N. Yogish Bhat said that the district administration had sent proposals to the Government through the Labour Ministry. Steps would be taken to address the problems, he added.
