The newly constructed flyover on Usman Road. CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation is considering constructing a foot overbridge on South Usman Road to help pedestrians. Mayor M. Subramanian on Sunday told The Hindu that the officials were drawing up a proposal to lay a foot over-bridge to facilitate an easy pedestrian movement and to avoid traffic hurdles. Mr. Subramanian said he had discussions with Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin about pedestrians’ hardships and the need for having such a foot over-bridge. Mr. Stalin advised the officials to take immediate action, he added. In the backdrop of the commissioning of the flyover on Usman Road, pedestrians said crossing the road had become a challenge following the recent two-way traffic movement. “During this weekend, there were thousands of people at the shops on Ranganathan Street. It was almost impossible to cross Usman Road,” said M. Jayashri, who went to Usman Road on Saturday. Due to an increased vehicular movement, pedestrians said crossing Usman Road from different points such as Ranganathan Street, Natesan Street, Mahalakshmi Street and Motilal Street had become an ordeal. With the flyover starting near the entrance of Ramanathan Street, heavy vehicular traffic combined with pedestrian movement seems to have contributed to the congestion further. It would be very helpful if more traffic police personnel are posted along this stretch to help commuters, V. Bharath, a resident said.
