Rare sight: Water gushing through crest gates at Srisailam dam on Sunday. HYDERABAD: The flood gates of Srisailam Project were opened on Sunday with five lakh cusecs of inflows joining the dam. Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah performed a puja to Goddess Ganga and pressed the button formally lifting four out of the 12 crest-gates of the project—numbers 5, 6, 7 and 8. The opened crest-gates discharged about one lakh cusecs towards Nagarjunasagar. With this, Nagarjunasagar in effect began to get about two lakh cusecs, as it was already receiving one lakh cusecs from the Srisailam Hydel Power Stations, where power was being generated at full capacity (1670 mw). Water levelsThe water level in Srisailam touched the 876 ft mark as against its full level of 885 ft. The inflow to the dam is expected at heavy level for a couple of days more, said Y. Abdul Basheer, Chief Engineer, Srisailam. Large crowds of tourists and pilgrims of the Srisailam temple thronged the dam sides to witness the enchanting sight of the water fall that sent out misty froth all round. Our Kurnool Special Correspondent adds: The power houses had full-scale generation on Sunday with right side power house operating all six units of 106 mw each and left bank power house operating five units with a capacity of 164 mw each. The Srisailam reservoir will now support the ayacut under Telugu Ganga, KC canal, SRBC and Nagarjanasagar canals for the season.
