BANGALORE: A habitual offender has been arrested on the charge of burglaries and vehicle theft by the Ashok Nagar police. The accused escaped from police custody recently and had also attacked policemen who had gone to arrest him, according to the police. The police said C.J. Harish Babu (32) of Nelamangala was involved in four cases of burglary and reported thefts of vehicles, including a van, a luxury car and two motorcycles. The police have recovered all the articles, including gold and silver, allegedly stolen by Babu. The police said Babu had committed thefts along with his accomplice Basavaraju. The police said Babu was first caught by Hoskote police for tampering with vehicle registration numbers. He and his accomplices were involved in several vehicle thefts in Davangere, Chitradurga, Channagiri, Tumkur and Sira, the police said. He was also involved in theft of a car and a van in Jeevan Bima Nagar and from a place near the Kempegowda Bus Station here, respectively. Babu escaped from the custody of the police while returning to Bangalore Prison after he was produced before a magistrate court in April 2008. The police said Babu then joined Basavaraju and reportedly burgled two houses in Peenya, Jnanabharati and Bidadi. They allegedly stole cars and motorcycles in Peenya, Jnanabharati, Siddapura and Ashok Nagar police limits. He is said to have stabbed a few police constables when they went to arrest him.
