For the kids: Revenue Minister G. Karunakar Reddy at a function to lay the foundation stone of the Bal Bhavan in Chitradurga on Monday. Chitradurga: Revenue Minister G. Karunakar Reddy laid the foundation stone of the Rs. 1.4-crore Bal Bhavan, to be built near Vonake Vobbavva Stadium, here on Monday. Speaking after performing the “bhoomi puja”, Mr. Reddy said that the activities undertaken at the bal Bhavan should serve as a model for the other districts of the State. Departments should not only spend money on constructing buildings, but should also ensure that they were properly maintained. Mr. Reddy lauded the district administration for taking the initiative to construct the Bal Bhavan. Earlier, welcoming the gathering, Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department Ramesh Halbhavi said the building would be ready within a year. A sum of Rs. 82 lakh had been released and the rest of the funds would be released in a phased manner. The building will comprise a dormitory, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a children’s park, a rock garden, fountains, an open-air theatre and a library. It will be built on three acres of land. “A miniature model of Chitradurga Fort will be an added highlight of the building,” he said. Earlier in the day, the Minister participated in the World Population Day programme organised at the district hospital. Before launching an awareness jatha, he called upon people to adopt family planning. He said that due to population explosion, the country would face a shortage of resources. People should limit the size of their families in order to conserve resources, he said. Hundreds of students of nursing and schoolchildren participated in the jatha carrying placards and banners.
