Civic polls: NCP, Left parties join hands

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India will jointly fight the forthcoming civic body polls in the State.

The elections to 92 urban local bodies are scheduled to be held on September 19.

The leaders of the State units of the three parties took the decision to fight the ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance as well as Opposition Congress at a joint meeting held here on Monday.

Among others who attended the meeting include NCP State president Bijay Mohapatra, secretary of the State unit of CPI(M) Janardan Pati and secretary of the State Committee of CPI Dibakar Nayak.

The decision of the three parties deciding to fight the urban body polls jointly has thus ruled out the possibility of their joining hands with the Congress or any other Opposition party.

As regards the ruling alliance, the chance of both parties contesting the polls jointly in all the districts also appears bleak.

Although the senior leaders of both the parties were in favour of the alliance sharing the seats in every civic body, in many districts the local leaders were of the view that they should fight the polls separately to strengthen their position ahead of the Assembly polls.

The BJD and BJP had fought against each other in a majority of districts in the last civic body polls.
