In full swing: Work on construction of a new market at Ravuthankulam, Muthialpet in Puducherry started a month ago.

PUDUCHERRY: As part of the proposed civil works, the Puducherry Municipality will soon construct three new markets and carry out improvement works at a few existing markets to provide additional facility to residents in its limits.

The new markets will come up at Ravuthankulam in Muthialpet, Gingee Salai and Muthialpet on M.G. Road.

Currently, the Puducherry Municipality is maintaining markets at Grand Bazaar, Petit Bazaar, Muthialpet, Saram, Mudaliarpet, Thengaithittu, Murungapakkam, Nellithope and Kombakkam.

Officials of the Puducherry Municipality said the construction works for a new market at Ravuthankulam, near Solai Nagar, Muthialpet had commenced a month ago. The facility has been planned at an estimate of Rs. 78 lakh.

“A new market will be constructed at Gingee Salai, which at present is functioning on an open ground, at Rs. 76 lakh. We are finalising the plan for the market. We are planning it as a heritage building design in consultation with INTACH, as it would come up within the town limits,” an official said.

Planned as a fish market, it would also accommodate sections for sale of vegetables too.

The local body has proposed to modernise this market with air-conditioning facility, he added.

The existing market at Muthialpet, which is in a dilapidated state, would give way to a new structure soon. Tenders would be floated in a couple of weeks, he said, adding that the works would be carried out at an estimate of Rs. 1.5 crore. Councillors of the local body had raised the need to reconstruct the market soon during the recently held council meeting as it was in a badly damaged condition. The reconstruction works were pending for over two years and officials said the estimates were being prepared for the works.

Already, the Municipality has planned to carry out improvement works to the market at Nellithope, renovation of the market building at Kombakkam and flooring works at the vegetable market at Petit Bazaar.
