Zebra crossing needed

A large number of tourists and devotees visiting Thanjavur Big Temple every day find it very difficult to cross the road in front of the temple. Provision of a zebra crossing with speed-breakers on both sides will alleviate the problem to a certain extent. It is also necessary to regulate tourist buses for entry and exit without any hindrance to the regular traffic. Will the authorities concerned look into this and do the needful at the earliest?

Bad roads

It is well over a year since the underground drainage work was completed in the LIC Colony at Thanjavur. The trenches dug for the purpose were duly closed thereafter. Some months later, only the main road and that in the 6th street were re-laid. As the monsoon is round the corner, the residents of 1st and 5th streets have to wade through pools of muddy water. Will the officials give this problem the attention it deserves?

Bus service for students

The students of SASTRA University near Vallam have to suffer due to paucity of bus service. Only one trip of vestibule bus is being run to the university from new bus stand. Many students, especially girls, are unable to get into the bus due to overcrowding. The students from medical college area suffer as the buses skip stops on the route in the morning hours.

There are a good number of educational institutions in Vallam. Even the ‘point to point’ buses may stop at SASTRA. The town buses now terminating at Vallam may be extended to University morning and evening hours.

Special trains, please

It makes for sad reading that it will take another couple of months for the introduction of regular train services in the Tiruvarur–Nagore section.

I request the railways to take steps to run special trains to Tiruvarur and Mayiladuturai from Tiruchi every one hour during the Velankanni Church annual festival which commences on August 29. This will reduce the difficulty of devotees.

Noorul Huda,

Burning coir

A burning coir thread is tied up in the pillars near cigarette shops in bus stands for smokers. Besides the problems to health, this damages the dresses of passengers sitting there. I would like this to be stopped immediately.

No fire station

Adirampattinam is the largest town panchayat in Thanjavur district. Recently a fire accident took place at Old Chetty Street in which over six houses were gutted before the fire engine reached from Pattukkottai. A fire station is the need of the hour in Adirampattinam.

Post office far away

Kumbakonam East Post Office which was catering to the postal needs of Nall Road, BSNL and Srinagar Colony areas has now been shifted to Kumbakonam Railway Station which is far away. A suitable building is available near Nall Road where the post office can be housed.

K. Santhanam,

Kumbakonam.

Pensionary benefits delayed

According priority to claims of retirement benefits has been stressed by the State Human Rights Commission’s Chief Justice Venkatachalamoorthy.

If the annual inspection of all government and local body offices is taken up, and the pay bills of staffers verified, with reference to the service registers of government staff, together with the leave accounts, acquaintance registers and the accounts for the remittance of recoveries made in pay bills there won’t be any queries in the pension papers to be authorised by the Accountant-General and the Director of Long Form Audit, Chennai.

All sorts of clerical omissions and commissions are found, only during the process of pension papers with reference to the SRs and their rectifications take much time and as a result, the pensionary benefits, are delayed.

R.S.Moorthy,

Karur.
