BANGALORE: Should it be Bengaluru or Bengalooru? This was the question that was posed before the Karnataka High Court when a public interest litigation (PIL) petition on the correct nomenclature of the Silicon City came up for hearing on Monday. The petitionershad challenged the lack of clarity by the Government in coming up with a grammatically correct word for Bangalore city. They said on November 1, 2006, the State Government decided to change the name of Bangalore to Bengalooru. In February and March 2008, the petitioners said they learnt that the name was now Bengaluru. They filed an application under the Right to Information Act seeking details of the correct name and the petitioners were informed that the name is Bengaluru. They said the residents of the city should have been consulted before the State decided to change the name. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran and Justice V. Gopala Gowda asked the Principal Government Advocate to ascertain facts and adjourned further hearing on the case to Wednesday. BBMP Commissioner summonedA Division Bench on Monday summoned the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner S. Subramanya to appear in court. The Bench passed the order on a contempt petition. The petitioner had contended that in spite of the court direction, the Commissioner had not changed the khata of a plot of land in Vyalikaval in the name of a mosque.
