Corrections and clarifications

The seventh paragraph in a box item “Qasmi was on holiday” (which accompanied a report “SIMI network in many States exposed”) (August 17, 2008) gave the names of three SIMI activists as “Sajid Mansuri, Shamshuddin Siddiqui and Arif Shiekh”. Two of the names should have been Samsuddin Sheikh and Arif Quadri.

A column “Results at a Glance” (“Olympics – Sport”, August 17, 2008) gave the result for Women’s Heptathlon 800m as “1. Tatiana Chernova (Rus) 2:06.50 …”, while another column “Goldies”, on the same page, gave it as “Nataliia Dobrynska (Ukr): Athletics: Women’s Heptathlon.” It was Dobrynska who won the event.

The third paragraph in a report “Bernard bags gold after nervous start” (“Olympics – Sport”, August 15, 2008) said that France’s Alain Bernard has broken the world record in 100m freestyle three times, including Wednesday’s semifinal, while the fourth paragraph said “Thursday, however, was a different story. Lezak ended in a dead heat for bronze with Brazilian Cesar Cielo Filho, 0.46 behind Bernard’s time of 47.21. World record holder Eamon Sullivan of Australia took the silver”. It led to a query on who had held the world record at the time of the finals. The Sports Desk clarifies that Sullivan bettered Bernard’s 100m freestyle mark in the opening leg of the 4x100m relay in Beijing. Bernard responded in the semi-final of the 100m with a time of 47.20, only to be subsequently bettered again in the next semi-final by Sullivan with a time of 47.05. Sullivan is the current world record holder for the 50m freestyle and the 100m freestyle. Bernard won the Olympic 100m freestyle in 47.21, while Sullivan took the silver in 47.32.

The third paragraph of an AFP report “Federer, Williams sisters bow out” (“Olympics – Sport”, August 15, 2008) was “Federer, who hands over his number one crown to Rafael Nadal on Monday, was broken when serving for the first set and was crushed in the second set tie-break.” It should have been Federer serving to stay in the set.

The eleventh paragraph in a report “Liu sets three World records” (“Sport”, August 14, 2008) was “She [Liu Chunhong of China] realised her full potential in Athens, setting all three Olympic records in the 69kg class (122kg snatch, 152kg clean and jerk, and 275kg total) on her way to winning her first Olympic gold medal.” It should have been 153 kg.
