This Day That Age
The Railway Minister, Jagjivan Ram, on August 18 announced in the Lok Sabha that new freight rates for goods and parcels traffic would take effect from October 1, 1958. Under the new freight structure the overall freight burden on food grains has been reduced. There will be no overall increase in the freight structure on fruits, vegetables, kerosene oil and alt while special treatment continues to be accorded to handloom products, khadi, books and milk. The Railway Minister made the announcement while presenting to the House a statement containing the Government’s decisions on the recommendations of the Railway Freight Structure Inquiry Committee.
