Kajameian HSS is champion

Srivilliputhur: Kajameian Higher Secondary School (Tiruchi) won the boys’ title, while Corporation Higher Secondary School (Nungambakam) retained the title in the girls’ section in the State inter-School under-16 boys and girls volleyball championship at Anand Nagar, near here on Monday.

The results: Boys: Final: Kajameian HSS (Tiruchi) bt Don Bosco (Chennai) 25-14, 23-25, 25-15. Third place: PKD (Pollachi) bt Veludayar (Tiruvarur) 21-25, 25-22, 25-20.

Girls: Final: Corporation HSS (Nungambakam) bt Sri Sarada (Salem) 17-25, 25-8, 25-21. Third place: John Bosco (Hosur) bt Vallur Gurukulam 25-19, 25-22.

Sundar, Anfin shine

At Tirunelveli, half-centuries by N. Sundar and N. Anfin helped National College of Engineering defeat ASAPC by 101 runs in the ICL Trophy inter-Collegiate cricket tournament on Monday.

The scores: National CE 218 for three in 25 overs (N. Sundar 52, N. Anfin 52) bt ASAPC 117 in 20.5 overs (Y. Shafin three for seven, C. Rathinavel three for 14); Paramakalyani 89 in 24.2 overs (Premkumar four for 19) lost to TDMNS 94 for six in 17.5 overs (Agasamoorthy three for 16); Sadakatullah 116 for four in 20 overs lost to Veerachettiar EC 119 for five in 16.1 overs; Joe Suresh EC 152 for nine in 25 overs (Pradap 70, K. Raja three for 23) lost to FX EC 156 for two in 21 overs (Balaji 62, Nataraj 34).

Xavier’s spell in vain

At Tuticorin, Xavier’s six for 19 went in vain as Power Cricket Club beat DCW Cricket Club by 30 runs in the Canara Bank-TDCA league on Sunday.

The scores: Power CC 131 in 33.1 overs (Ashok 42, Xavier six for 19) bt DCW 101 in 30.2 overs (Raj 37, Rajasekar four for 27, Umar three for 29); ASKR CC 136 in 30 overs (Jegadish 30) lost to Pusco CC 137 for three in 23.2 overs (Karthik 57, Sebastin 47 n.o.); Seconds CC 141 in 23 overs (Prakash 26, Prabakar three for 25) bt Gavaskar 118 in 24.3 overs (Sam Prince 37 n.o., Pon Mariappan four for 24).

Manoj, Prasanna excel

An unbeaten century by Manoj Babu and a useful 69 by Prasanna Venkatesh helped Madurai defeat Erode by 85 runs for its second win in the four-team league of the TNCA inter-district under-16 cricket tournament in Nagercoil on Monday.

The scores: At Nagercoil: Tirunelveli 145 in 49.2 overs (R. Sundaraj 44, Saharya Sunil four for 22, Arun Motcharaj three for 13) lost to Kanyakumari 149 for seven in 48.1 overs (R. Sundaraj four for 34, Arun Motcharaj 43, J. Saharya Sunil 56 n.o.); Madurai 257 for three in 50 overs (Manoj Babu 100 n.o., Prasanna Venkatesh 69) bt Erode 172 in 40.5 overs (Kavin Prasad 60, R. Vignesh 28, Yoga Vijay three for 19).

At Theni: Nilgiris 79 in 32.2 overs (Syed Akbar three for 22, Ulaganathan three for eight) lost to Theni 80 in 11.2 overs (Ulaganathan 36); Tiruvarur 160 in 38.4 overs (Rajesh three for 27) bt Nagapattinam 158 for eight in 50 overs (Rajkamal 38, Suresndav four for 28).

At Tuticorin: Tuticorin 137 in 44 overs (Suraj 37, Sekar four for 34) lost to Dharmapuri 138 for nine in 49.4 overs (Ponnarasu 30 n.o., Suraj four for 17); Villupuram 87 in 35 overs (Anokraj three for 34, Pandidurai three for 15) lost to Sivagangai 88 for two in 33.5 overs (P. Madhan 25).

Hat-trick by Gabriel

At Srivilliputhur, a hat-trick by Gabriel helped Tirunelveli defeat Kanyakumari 4-0 for the title in the final of the Tamil Nadu South Zone inter-district hockey championship on Sunday.

Dilipan scored the other goal.

In the third-place match, Dindigul beat Virudhunagar 2-1. Abdul Hameed and M. Balaji scored for Dindigul. Prasanna scored for Virudhunagar. — Sports Correspondent
