‘Ensure salaries are paid on time’

Special Correspondent

‘Release monthly wages held over for 12 months

‘Give preference to existing workers for promotions’

GULBARGA: Gram panchayat workers affiliated to the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Workers’ Sangha on Monday demanded that the State Government ensure that the salaries were paid on time.

Gram panchayat workers including bill collectors, clerks, watermen, peons and others came in a procession to the taluk panchayat office in the city and staged a protest demonstration and dharna. They demanded that the monthly wages that had not been paid for the past 12 months be released immediately.

Sangha president Shivalingaiah Matpathi and general secretary Ashok said their demand for payment of minimum wages had been pending before the State Government for two years and urged the new BJP Government concede their demand.

They expressed displeasure over the State Government’s decision of not considering their demand for promotions while implementing its new policy of recruitment to different posts in gram panchayats. Mr. Matpathi said most of the panchayat workers had passed the SSLC examination, and many of them were graduates.

The Government should give preference to eligible candidates among the existing workers in the gram panchayats for higher posts at the time of recruitment.

Mr. Matpathi said the Government should also initiate measures to introduce service registers for all gram panchayats workers and extend benefits like leave, maternity leave benefits, gratuity etc. The Jana Sri Insurance scheme should be extended to gram panchayat workers, he demanded.
