COIMBATORE: Some of the trade unions here have sought a comprehensive social security programme for farm workers. The Coimbatore district units of AITUC, CITU and HMS have said in a joint press release that the Union and State Governments should provide pesticides and fertilizers to farmers at subsidised prices and offer loans in easy instalments. The public distribution system should be expanded to include distribution of all essential commodities. The Governments should ban forward contract trading to control prices of commodities and should not permit online business. The unions said the Governments should withdraw the exemptions given to special economic zones on labour welfare schemes and should selling the shares of profit-making public sector companies. With regard to the textile sector, the unions said the State Government should immediately find a solution to wage issue of the textile mill workers. The Centre should not permit export of cotton without assessing the domestic needs. All the mill labourers should be made into permanent workers and should not be employed under schemes such as camp coolies, Thirumana Thittam and Mangalya Thittam. All labour welfare schemes should be implemented in all the sectors in the State and workers in the unorganised sector should also be given benefits such as provident fund and medical facilities.
