Footboard travel

In buses plying along Tiruchi-Pudukottai Road during peak hours are students on footboards without paying any heed to danger.

These buses pass through police check posts where they watch it with indifference. The writing is on the wall.

T.V. Sreekumar,

Indian Bank Colony.

Increment for best teachers

The State and Centre honour the best teachers with “Dr.Radhakrishnan Award” and the “National Award” respectively.

The Central government has granted them an extension of service by two years. Recently, the teachers’ association in Tamil Nadu made a representation to the State Government to extend a similar benefit to the State awardees.

Instead of extending the service, the government may grant them an additional increment which would benefit both the awardees and the government.

First, an additional increment in the salary would benefit the awardee monetarily throughout his remaining service and after retirement. It would benefit the spouse also in the event of the death of the awardee.

Second, the burden on the exchequer is reduced since, instead of a full salary after the 58th year of the awardee for two years, the government would be paying only the additional increment.

N. S. G. Kirushnan,

Srirangam.

Consumer Forum sans member

I thank the Tamil Nadu government for appointing a Chairman for Tamil Nadu State Consumer Redressal Forum.

The State Forum is functioning with a president and one member against the required strength of a president and two members.

The forum is unable to take up cases for hearing if the only member goes on leave.

The forum is hearing consumer cases filed during 2004 and 2005 as against the National Forum’s guidelines to dispose of the cases within three months of filing. As justice delayed is justice denied, I request the government to immediately appoint the second member.

R. Ganesan,

Ganesapuram.

Tirumala temple entry, exit points

When there are two ways for reaching Tirumala from Tirupathi and returning , it is not understandable as to why the T.T.Devasthanam is not examining of providing separate entry and exit points for devotees in order to avoid stampede as it happened at the Naina Devi temple.

Further, the Devasthanam should direct volunteers inside the temple not to push the pilgrims.

Because of the push, children are afraid of returning to the Tirumala temple.

T. M. Sathiamurthi,

Tiruchi.

More buses needed for Khajamalai

Many colonies have come up on Khajamalai Main Road in the city.

The buses being operated from K. K. Nagar Terminus to Chathiram Bus Stand are not adequate.

I request the State Transport Corporation to run more buses.

Abuzaid Munavary,

R. S. Puram.

Stampede fear

Tiruchi Rail Junction has security check with barricades at the entrance to the first platform through which only one person can pass at a time. This is very good.

But what if there is a security threat on the first platform and a train full of passengers.

There will be a stampede which will kill and injure more people than a bomb. There will be no escape route for people. Goutam Ramaprasad,

Dindigul Road.

Wrong parking

Plenty of heavy vehicles loaded with iron sheets and rods are parked outside the steel godown near K.K.Nagar.

These trucks not only cover half the road but also cause danger with the protruding sheets and rods.

The general public has to face danger passing by these trucks.

There is ample place for parking on the opposite side of the Godown.

I request the authorities to install ‘no parking’ boards.

Mubashir

K.K.Nagar.

Old devotees’ home suggested

As many old devotees are desirous of settling down here and have darshan of Lord Renganatha and other temples in and around Srirangam, the Corporation can construct a home at a nominal monthly/annual payment.

S. Srinivasan,

Srirangam.

Construction workers’ plight moving

Your report on the trials and tribulations faced by construction workers in these days of unbridled inflation must make every human being sad.

The State Government cannot just wash its hands of the matter but instead appoint a committee of ministers and senior officials to study these problems and mitigate them.

The daily sacrifices they make to stay alive is enough even for a court to take up the issue on suo motu basis and direct the government to do its job. To start with, they should be given free bus passes.

T. M. Renganathan,

Srirangam.

Ticket checking delay

It is the practice of checking inspectors of the State Transport Corporation to stand at the terminal or important bus stops to check ticketless travelling.

The passengers are always in a hurry to catch the next bus. The inspectors could check the tickets in the running buses itself.

M. Sambasivam,

Manachanallur.

Build cement benches

No seating arrangement has been made in the bus shelters of Chatram bus stand.

The passengers have to stand for hours together.

Cement benches should be constructed for the benefit of the people.

Aged persons, children and ladies are all facing a lot of problems without the seating arrangement which is mandatory.

Janakimaindhan S. Raj,

O.F.T. Estate.

Thank you, Corporation

I thank the corporation for relaying the entire South Devi street in Srirangam. But, to our surprise, our demand for erection of speed-breakers at two or three places in the stretch has been overlooked.

The stretch is considerably wide up to Malattar Bridge and vehicles ply at breakneck speed even before this road was relaid. Now, a smooth stretch has given a blanket invitation to vehicle-users to go berserk.

I request steps for erection of speed breakers at vantage points in the street.

J. Anantha Padmanabhan,

Srirangam.

No buses halt at model bus shelter

The Corporation authorities have constructed a model bus shelter for the sake of public near Tiruchi junction.

But none of the town buses halt here.

Instead they halt at the roundabout in front of the junction.

This causes traffic congestion and hindrance to other vehicle-users.

G. Rajesh Gopal,

OFT Estate.

Walking stretch

Srirangam is thickly populated. Change in lifestyle has mandated daily walking but walking on the streets is risky and a hindrance to vehicular traffic. Public finds it convenient to use places where there is no risk- like parks. The government is bound to arrange for this purpose.

K. Srinivasan,

Tiruvanaikoil.
