NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan registrar G. R. Sunder was fatally knocked down by an unknown vehicle on Kasturba Gandhi Marg here on Monday. The accident took place around 5-30 a.m. when 70-year-old Dr. Sunder was taking a morning walk near India Gate. He was crossing the road when a speeding vehicle hit him. He sustained serious head injuries and was lying in a pool of blood when a passer-by noticed him and informed his family. He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he was declared brought dead. “Someone found him lying on the road and made a call from his cell phone. The call was received by Dr. Sunder’s driver who in turn informed the family. According to the passer-by, a speeding call centre cab hit him when he was crossing the road,” said Mr. Om Cherri, Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Remembering Dr. Sunder as a “scholarly person”, Mr. Cherri said: “He joined the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1990 and was in charge of administration. Before joining the Bhavan, he was a programme officer at Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti on Tees January Marg for several years.” Dr. Sunder, who stayed on the Bhavan campus, is survived by his wife and two sons. Both his sons are married and settled outside the Capital. A case has been registered at the Tilak Marg police station and investigations initiated into the accident.
