Man sets wife ablaze

CHENNAI: In a fit of rage, a man set his wife ablaze and later, tried to rescue her. However, the woman succumbed to burns while he is battling 60 per cent burns at the hospital, police said.
S. Saravanan (36) of Perumal Street in Choolaimedu often quarrelled with his wife S. Manjula (25) in an inebriated condition. On Sunday night too, there was a heated argument between them over a trivial issue and Saravanan poured kerosene on his wife and set her on fire, police said.
After hearing her cries, he attempted to rescue her, using blankets. Both of them suffered burns. Neighbours rushed the couple to the Government Royapettah Hospital where Manjula died soon after admission.
Saravanan’s condition was said to be critical. The Choolaimedu police have registered a case, police added.
