Gowrishankar, Katti join BJP

BANGALORE: Janata Dal (S) MLAs Umesh Katti and Gowrishankar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday by quitting their Assembly membership.

With this, the number of former MLAs from the Opposition parties who quit their seat and joined the BJP has increased to seven.

Two members from the Janata Dal (S) and three from the Congress joined the BJP. Of these, three have been made ministers while one has been appointed chairman of the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board. Umesh Katti represented Hukkeri while Mr. Gowrishankar is the son of former Minister C. Chennigappa is from Madhugiri.

According to sources in the BJP, Mr. Katti, an influential Lingayat leader, is likely to be made a Minister soon. With this, speculation is rife on who might be dropped. Sources close to Mr. Yeddyurappa said a Lingayat Minister might be asked to step down to accommodate Mr. Katti.
