Central trade unions to go on strike tomorrow
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Members of the central trade unions in various industrial sectors and agriculture labourers affiliated to Left parties in Tamil Nadu will participate in the all-India general strike organised by the Central trade unions on August 20 against price rise and economic and labour policies of the Centre, CITU general secretary A. Soundararajan said on Monday.
Though the DMK-affiliated Labour Progressive Front is not participating in the strike, it has announced its support to the demands of the Central trade unions.
Talking to reporters along with AITUC general secretary S.S. Thiyagarajan, Mr. Soundararajan said the futures trading in essential commodities had led to hoarding and price rise.
The government should ban the trading in 25 essential commodities.
He said many multi-national companies and big Indian companies were denying trade union rights to their workers.
“Even if they allow trade unions they don’t hold talks with the unions on labour-related issues. These companies are even pressuring the government to amend labour laws to serve the interests of the managements.”
